Frequently Asked Questions

What does Latosta mean? It's short for LApTOp STAnd. Omit all of the lower case letters and you're left with Latosta.

Can I use Latosta on my lap or when lying on my bed? No. The Latosta laptop stand is designed to be used on a flat surface such as a desk or table and will not work on any irregular surface.

How does the Latosta Laptop stand work? It uses the structure of the keyboard itself. The keyboard rests on the middle part of the stand, and the upper arm that reaches over the keyboard restricts the tilt of the stand. By positioning the stands closer to the front you will get a larger keyboard angle, and by positioning the stand closer to the screen you will get a lower angle. Photos are provided in the product description showing high and low positions.

How much does Latosta lift up the back of the keyboard? This depends on how thick and how long your keyboard is. A thinner keyboard will result in a lower adjustment range, while a thicker keyboard will result in a higher adjustment range. Assuming a 9 inch keyboard length, these are the approximate lift heights for a given keyboard thickness: 1/2" thickness = 1 - 1 3/4";   3/4" thickness = 1 1/2 - 2 1/4"; 1" thickness = 2 - 2 3/4" .

Is the Latosta compatible with my laptop? Open up your laptop and measure the thickness of the keyboard without the screen. If your laptop keyboard is 1 1/4" thick or less, the Latosta should fit. Now check the distance of the keys from the left and right sides of the keyboard: if the keys are 1/2" or further from the edge, you should be OK. Some users have keys closer to the edge than 1/2" but are able to use the Latosta anyway if the keys are recessed into the keyboard so that the stand does not press on the keys; however, it may still inhibit access to the keys where it overlaps. The stand may also be placed below the keys and closer to the user.  For optimum performance, we do not recommend Latosta if your keys are closer than 1/2" from the edge.

Also, keyboards that are tapered on the edge (i.e. Apple Air) do not provide a flat enough surface to allow the stand to be stable. The bottom edge of the keyboard must be parallel to the table or work surface for proper stability.

What if I need access to the ports on the side? The Latosta stand will block some portion of the side of the keyboard. What is blocked depends on where your ports are on your laptop, and where you place the stands. The stand may be adjusted easily around most power connections, but if you frequently take disks in and out of your computer Latosta might not be a good choice for your needs.

Can I close the laptop while it's on the Latosta stand? The laptop may be partially closed, but will not close all of the way due to the portion of the stand that rests on top of the keyboard.

How portable is Latosta? VERY! It's made of 3/16" stainless steel or 3/16" 6061 anodized aluminum. Each stand measures 4 1/2" by 2" by 1/4". They will easily slip into your pocket or laptop case, even the very small cases that are form fit to the computer. It's the most portable laptop stand on the market!

How robust is this stand? Can it be easily damaged? The stainless steel versions of this stand would be very difficult or impossible for you to damage in normal use. Stainless steel will not rust or corrode. If you threw them against a cement wall you might scratch them a little, but they should still work fine! Try that with any other stand! The anodized aluminum versions are much lighter, and made out of a softer metal. They're plenty strong for normal use and have been tested with 40 lbs resting on them, but could be bent if abused. If bent, no problem, just bend them back. Stainless steel models have a 5 year warranty for 5 years, and aluminum models have a 2 year warranty.

How does Latosta keep my laptop cooler? By lifting up the keyboard, air circulates more freely underneath, which will allow the heat to dissipate. If you've ever used your laptop on your lap, you know they can get hot!  Click here to see the laptop cooling test results.

How does Latosta compare to other portable laptop stands on the market? Latosta is made for those who use their laptops in multiple locations. There are only a few other laptop stands we found that are portable enough to fit into a laptop case. And they are larger, heavier and more expensive, although they have the advantage of not blocking the side of the keyboard, and it does not matter how close the keys are to the edge. If you think one of them will work better for you, please buy it! For the optimum in portability, simplicity and design aesthetics, we think Latosta is the best choice!
